In Mumbai, engineers from the BMC road department who received notices for delayed response to pothole complaints have provided their explanations. They mentioned that many roads were not under their jurisdiction, but belonged to other agencies. They also stated that some project road contractors had not completed repair work, leading them to engage their own contractors. Additionally, they cited being occupied due to the Prime Minister’s visit to the city. The BMC administration cautioned the engineers to promptly address potholes and avoid the need for further notices and disciplinary action. The BMC had issued show-cause notices to 23 road department engineers for the delays. Furthermore, there are 227 sub-engineers each responsible for monitoring a 9km network, with notices issued to them questioning potential consequences for tardy response to potholes. Previously, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers' Union had requested the BMC chief not to demoralize staff with punitive measures. The Union highlighted that engineers work long hours, even on weekends. They suggested implementing two shifts due to heavy workloads and arranging a meeting to better understand the challenges faced by the engineers. Additionally, the Union pointed out that Metro construction in the city required roads to be maintained by the respective contractors as per the issued NOCs.
